Our mission
Manayetu (our manna) initiative promotes sustainable community based production of highly nutritious food supplements for all ages around Kenya, focusing on supporting the most vulnerable.
Our vision
Every community has the means and knowledge to improve sustainable food security by local production of highly nutritious food supplements.
About Us
Manayetu is an initiative of Engineers Without Borders Israel organization, joined by various eager partners who promote its implementation. Our major partners are local communities, starting with Keriko Secondary School in Nakuru County which manages the first Spirulina R&D and production site. On the public side our partners are the Government of Nakuru County, Kenya's first lady "Mama doing good" organization, the Embassy of Israel in Kenya and Mashav (Israel’s Agency for International Development Cooperation). On the academic side our partners are Tel Aviv University and Mount Kenya University, and we keep promote joining of additional partners.
How we work
Promotion of potential food supplements, suitable for local diet, nutritional needs and production capabilities. We already produce Spirulina "super food', and investigate the optional production of moringa, and animal feeding supplements like duckweed, azolla and black soldier fly.
Collaboration with local authorities and community for selection of relevant products, consumers and production sites, and securing of funding for vulnerable consumers.
Continuous R&D of relevant appropriate technologies, adapted to local needs and capabilities, for higher productivity and cost efficiency. R&D includes also supporting issues such as solar energy, sensors, and data management.
Development of local knowledge and training hubs and professional support teams, for capacity building of new and advanced local producers.
Ongoing partnering with service providers of packaging, storage, food safety QA and distribution of products as raw material, tablets or fortifying agent in food products such as dried vegetables and porridge flour.
Increasing general public awareness and engagement through media, demonstration of technologies and products and meetings with the community.
Empowerment of women and farmers' groups, based on promoting their inclusion in the production sites. Engaging also schools as production sites and development of educational activity around the initiative technologies.
Academic R&D, focused on optimal growing and use of the various optional products.
